Why does NOTTENSTEIN exist?
NOTTENSTEIN exists to celebrate what does not need to be perfect to be beautiful. This is not about mass production or flawless jewelry. It is about something real: craftsmanship for its own sake, driven by the need to create.
What is the Motivation?
The appeal lies in playing with contradiction, in uniting the raw and the refined. In seeing something new come into being and other people taking pleasure in it. That is what drives us.
The Process
I.
From an idea...
Every ring begins as an idea. It is first shaped in wax, where it takes on its initial physical form. From this model, a sand mold is created; a deliberately elemental process that plays a decisive role in shaping the ring’s character.
II.
...through casting,
Solid silver is heated in a crucible until individual pellets melt into a glowing, liquid mass. During casting, the form from the sand is transferred to the metal. The result is not a perfect replica, but a unique piece, marked by subtle variations: traces of the process, and its own character.
III.
...to the ring.
In the final step, the piece is cut, milled, and polished by hand. Edges are refined, surfaces emerge, and the ring slowly becomes what it is meant to be.
